My website address is: https://www.myhomelab.net.
Welcome to My Home Lab! This document explains how your personal data (mostly from comments and emails) is handled on this site, and how we use cookies to ensure a smoother browsing experience. In simple terms:
- I don’t keep more than necessary.
- I don’t sell your data to any third party.
Everything collected is solely for the benefit of making this site better (and maybe sparking a conversation or two).
Data Collection & Use
What We Collect:
Comments and Emails:
- Only the data you voluntarily provide via comments or emails is collected, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
- An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
- This information is used solely to manage your contributions and respond to inquiries.
- No personal data is harvested for marketing or sold to anyone. Promise!
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
How We Use Your Data:
- To display and manage comments.
- To respond to email inquiries.
- To enhance and optimise the site based on feedback.
Data Availability:
If you ever wonder what information we might have about you, just ask!
Your provided details are available upon request.
We won’t hold your data longer than needed.
Once your query is resolved or if you request deletion, we’ll promptly remove it.
Data Sharing:
- We do not share your data with third parties—no nosy neighbours here.
- Your information is kept secure and used only for the purposes outlined above.
Cookie Policy.
What Are Cookies?
Small text files saved on your device to remember your preferences and improve your site experience
– kind of like a gentle digital high-five.
Cookies We Use:
Essential Cookies:
Necessary for the website to function properly (e.g., to keep track of your comment session). Without them, the site might act like a sleep-deprived IT admin!
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Analytics Cookies:
Help us understand how you use the site so we can tweak things for improvement, with no personal data stored or sold.
Your Options:
- You can disable cookies at any time via your browser settings, though this might limit some features.
- We won’t use persistent cookies for unsolicited marketing—your browsing is your business.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
Your Rights & How to Contact Us
Access and Deletion:
- You have the right to access any personal data (i.e., your comments and emails) we’ve collected.
- If you’d like a copy or request its deletion, just drop us an email at imd2020@myhomelab.net. We’re on it faster than a caffeinated coder!
Inquiries:
For any questions or concerns about this policy or how your data is used, please reach out using the contact details above.
